Once you have decided to adopt a basset, you should contact one or more rescue groups in your area and in neighboring states.

The next step is to discuss your situation (space, family members, other animals, etc.) in light of the dog's specific needs.  Bassets may need new homes for a number of reasons.  They may have been abused, they may be puppies, they may need a home as a result of a family move, a divorce or a death.  Each situation is unique and rescue group representatives will work with you to help with a good match.
